The Year of Brew
Week 8: Mountain Brew: Maja Blast
28 Feb 2021 - 5 min read
Welcome back to week eight of the Year of Brew! And just like the number 8 circles back on itself infinitely and the mighty Jormangundr (or
Koma, Cosmos Serpent
if we’re talking about Magic) bites on its own tail…. where is this going?
OH RIGHT! This week I’ve managed to combine one of my favorite strategies, Landfall (I love my Tatyova, Benthic Druid ), with one of my least favorite strategies, tokens (see our Podcast episode on color identity and playstyle) via Maja, Bretagard Protector !
Deck 8: Selesnya
Maja, Bretagard Protector
is one of the most simple and satisfying designs I’ve seen for a commander in a long time. She pumps your team implying that we want a lot of creatures, i.e. tokens, something white lends itself to nicely. How do we get said tokens? We play lands, something that we want to be doing anyway, especially in green.
Just Selesnya, the working man’s color combo (shoutout to Eric), no black or blue to get tricksy, and no red cause we’ll be dealing enough damage with our angels. Oh, did I mention I put in an angel token subtheme? Well I did, my deck, my rules.
Another thing that gets me so hype about this deck, despite being fairly straight forward and not spicy, is we have a lot of engines! Check out my series Rev Your Engines to see me go deep, but here we’re taking the easy route. Maja is an engine herself, but we get to play a bunch of other heaters like Felidar Retreat , Court of Grace , and Perilous Forays . With Enchantments being my favorite card type, we’re eatin’ good with this deck.
We’re also of course playing a thick ramp package to make sure we’re always producing with our many Landfall token generators, a la Sporemound and Zendikar’s Roil , a Tatyova favorite. We have the usual suspects, but Harvest Season , Roiling Regrowth , and Nissa’s Revelation are all cards I don’t see given enough love.
Once we’ve generated all our tokens, we can dig to our win conditions with Collective Unconscious and then rip an Entreat the Angels or Finale of Glory for approximately a million. Angels, remember?
