The Year of Brew
Week 12: You Can't Teach An Old Eric New Tricks
28 Mar 2021 - 5 min read
It’s on to the next member of the crew for this edition of Year of Brew! Eric has come through touting his usual Selesnya shenanigans, but with a commander who… wait a minute, what the hell is going on here?!
Deck 11: Selesnya
Julian: “So Eric, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me bring our audience another exciting decklist for the Year of Brew. Let’s not beat around the bush, what do we have prepared today?”
Eric: “Excited to be here, Julian! Yeah, I think the audience is going to really like this one, it’s a real heater. Its a deck based on another Wizards of the Coast product, Dungeons and Dragons!”
Julian: “Very exciting to hear! Can you tell us a bit about what the deck does within the mechanics of Magic?”
Eric: Oh, sure! I made sure to make it something really cool to go along with this unique theme! It’s a Selesnya deck that focuses on +1/+1 counters.”
Julian: “Oh, it’s a counters deck… in a green-white shell. Wait, isn’t this what you always do? I mean, I understand your allegiance to the Dromoka brood, but the idea of this series was to push outside our comfort zones. I figured you’d bring something with blue and black in it.”
Eric: “Dimir, really? What do I look like, some sort of scummy control player? No seriously, everybody is gonna love this. It’s got a bunch of ways to make tokens,
Mycoloth
,
Scute Swarm
,
Felidar Retreat
. And all these tokens, just maximize the effectiveness of our counters. Like, imagine playing
Cathar’s Crusade
and then playing a big
Secure the Wastes
! Now that’s a lot of power and toughness.”
Julian: “… okay, listen. I love you buddy, but these are known quantities. You play these in a bunch of your decks, and I hate to break it to you, but
Doubling Season
isn’t a pet card, it’s a staple in any token or counters deck. Work with me, there’s gotta be something in here that surprises.”
Eric: “Well we’re playing
Krark’s Other Thumb
.”
Julian: “Now that’s what I’m talking abou-.., wait why are we playing an Un-Card? Come to think of it, you know these are EDH decklists right? You don’t even have a commander in your list.”
Eric: “Oh yeah, that’s because
Kharis & The Beholder
is one of those special promos they give to WotC staff, so Moxfield doesn’t recognize it.”
Julian: “Kharis and the … ERIC! What the hell is this monstrosity?”
Eric: “It makes tokens, puts counters on the team, AND I get to roll my D20s, sometimes I even get advantage if the thumb is out. Like I said, it’s D&D themed!”
Julian: “… honestly, sure. Why the hell not? That’s all the time we have today, so I hope everyone enjoys the deck. Make sure to bring your D20s y’all!”
Eric: “But seriously, Julian, hear me out.
Vigor
is such an underrated card, I mean it. It lets you smash and you get more counters and-.., wait, where are you going? No, come back! We haven’t even talked about
