We’re back here in Year of Brew Land (as if we ever left lol) and the Arc of the Power of Friendship is entering a new phase. We’ve collaborated with the fellow Hexdrinkers on a series of decks, but now it’s back to just good ol’ Julian and his brews: name a better combination, I’ll wait.

And, I’m feeling in a generous mood, so I’ve asked the boys to give me 3 criteria, anything from color, to mechanics, to just overall strategy. I’ll take these stipulations and brew up something new and exciting for everyone to bring to future game nights. Chev is first, and he gave me the following criteria:

  • White
  • Combat Matters
  • Counters

  • Let’s see what can do to appease our glorious co-founder!

    Deck 14: Orzhov

So to appease Chev’s out of character demands, I’ve co-opted a new commander from the C21 Pre-cons, Felisa, Fang of Silverquill . Immediately, she hits all of the criteria provided. She’s Orzhov, so she has white, while still providing black as a comfort blanket for Chev’s preferences. She has Mentor and evasion, meaning she wants to be attacking and she wants the rest of the team to attack with her. And she cares about counters on our creatures, the more counters, the more creatures we’ll get to attack with. Overall, a perfect fit.

The deck as a whole leans on a few different groups of cards to run smoothly. The outlast lords from Khans of Tarkir like Abzan Battle Priest buff all our creatures with +1/+1 counters on them. Modular creatures from Mirrodin already have counters on them to synergize with Felisa. Ikoria cards like Luminous Broodmoth and Grimdancer provide a variety of ability counters to further diversify our value.

We also have a token subtheme. This stems from a combination of Silverquill providing a lot of support, Felisa providing an Inkling army, and Chev asking me to help him make a token deck about a week before I wrote this article. Anointed Procession is a must have for whenever we get Inklings, with a Cathar’s Crusade refueling the fire. Felidar Retreat hits both our goals with a singular card. And newcomers, Shadrix Silverquill , Blot out the Sky , and Inkshield are absolute beasts in this build.

Lastly, I had to include Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista combo for sneaky wins, and a Carnifex Demon to make Chev feel better about leaning so heavily in to the “inferior +1/+1 counters,” that damn Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons fanboy…

I hope Chev likes this deck, but I hope y’all like it even more. Go forth and Blot Out the Sky with your bloody ink!
